Sino German Cooperation

Water scarcity is already a key issue in many regions of the world. This problem will be further aggravated by climate change. Therefore, suitable methods must be developed to predict water availability, in order to avoid shortages and to minimize their consequences.

The Sino- German cooperation group focuses on three research topics:

  • Water supply under different climate change scenarios
  • Water demand according to socioeconomic pathways (SSP: Shared Socioeconomic Pathways)
  • Water governance and integrated risk management of water scarcity

Joint workshops in China and Germany as well as mutual visits serve the scientific exchange and the conception and application of joint research projects on these research topics.

The cooperation group, led by Prof. Schmalz, ihwb, and Prof. Wang, Nanjing University of Information Science & Technology, will run from May 2018 to May 2024. The 18 members each from Germany and China come from the following participating institutions:

Germany China
TU Darmstadt Nanjing University of Information Science & Technology
TU Munich National Climate Center of China Meteorological Administration, Beijing
University of Kiel Ningbo University
University of Munich Nanjing Institute of Geography & Limnology of Chinese Academy of Sciences
University of Gießen East China Normal University, Shanghai
University of Heidelberg
